Job Description for Nurse Manager, Critical Care Unit
The primary responsibility is to plan, manage, control and coordinate the activities of the unit.
She is accountable for the professional and nursing activities to ensure high standard of care are maintained as per established Critical Care SOPs.
She is also required to plan for staff development and participate in Nursing Education Programme.
Responsible for the activities of the department to ensure good standards of nursing care.
Assist in establishing, implementing and administering Unit Policies and Procedures.
Ensures established Unit Policies and Procedures, quality assurance programme, safety, environmental and infection control standards are adhered to.
Interprets Unit Policies and Procedures to new staff and provides orientation and training for new staff to job requirements, equipment and unit personnel.
Inspects unit daily for compliance with policies, procedures, regulations and standard, and takes corrective action when violation occurs.
Maintains harmonious working relationships both within the unit, the Medical Staff and other departments within the hospital in coordinating the customer’s total needs.
Create an environment for excellent customer service in Critical Care and cooperate with all / other departments in the hospital.
Monitor staff to ensure excellent customer service is delivered and project a professional image.
Timely handling of all customers’ complaints. Investigate, act and follow up to ensure that complaints have been handled satisfactorily
Responsible for organizing duty roster and deploying available resources within the unit and enhance productivity through Labour Productivity Management.
Prepares work schedules, assigns personnel, carry out evaluation of work performance and counseling of unit staff to promote staff improvement.
Adjust staffing to meet needs and provides adequate coverage of the unit.
Conducts unit meeting to allow dissemination of information and provide a platform for discussion and input from staff.
Prepares, reviews and monitors the operating budget to ensure the department is managed in a cost-effective way.
Review Customer Satisfaction data and implement the necessary corrective measures.
Ensures proper functioning of the equipment and coordinates with Engineering, Biomedical personnel and vendor’s technical support personnel in the management of the equipment.
Directs maintenance of unit facilities, equipment, supplies and materials in a condition to promote efficiency, health comfort and safety of patients and staff.
Responsible for good inventory standards for medicines, solutions, supplies and maintain all charging mechanisms pertaining to such supplies are correctly adhered to at all times.
Assist in the management of VIP Patients / Visitors.
Be involved in HMIS related project work and activities.
Implement new procedures for improvement of the nursing service and reduction of infection.
Carry out emergency resuscitation procedures both cardiac and respiratory in the absence of medical staff.
Participate in the Code Yellow activities.
Assume responsibility for IV cannulation, venipuncture in the absence of a Medical Practitioner.
Have sound knowledge of hospital policies and guide staff towards competent practice in:
Cardiac arrest protocol
Health and Safety Policies
Fire Regulations
Control of Infection Policies
Prepare yearly key performance indicators and set goals and objectives.
Accountable for discretionary use of overtime.
Implement Quality Indicators System to monitor level of nursing care standard for continuous development.
Participate in interviewing prospective employees and submit the recommendation for hiring.
Secure, motivate and counsel personnel for the unit so as to maximize their job satisfaction and career development.
Attend all departmental meetings and participate in various committee and task force meetings.
Maintains required unit records, reports and statistics for administrative purposes and budget preparation.
Update HRMS on staff hours worked, approve overtime, leave of absence, vacations etc.
Regularly monitor the training programmes for the unit staff and initiate the required programmes to carry out the training.
Conducts audits as and when needed.
Serves as a role model for staff by demonstrating clinical expertise when providing direct patient care.
Participates in the assessment and monitoring of staff competency.
Assumes responsibility for meeting JCI required mandatory education and monitoring of compliance to standards.
Ensure compliance to ESH policies and procedures.
Must take initiative to complete CPD points.
Performs other related duties as assigned by Senior Manager.
Education / Professional Qualification
The Job
SRN Registered with the Nursing Board.
BSc in Nursing is an added advantage.
Possess certificate in Critical Care Nursing.
Diploma / Certificate in Management will be an advantage.
Professional Experience

Good knowledge of written and spoken English.
Good interpersonal and communication skills.
Sound knowledge of principles of Critical Care Nursing in a multidisciplinary set up.
Knowledge of principles of unit management.
Knowledge of the new development in the nursing field.
Pleasant personality and motivated.
Computer literate.
Minimum 3 years experience in a supervisory position in a related nursing unit.
